UPWARD BOUND HOUSE FAMILY SHELTER

——————————————–

In January 2010, Vanessa De Vargas rounded up 17 interior designers to each design and furnish a room at Upward Bound House‘s new Family Shelter in Culver City, CA.  We were given a 250-350sf room, a full bed, bunk bed, 3 weeks and $0 budget.  Some of the designers asked their vendors to donate multiple items, such as lamps, tables and fabric, so I grabbed a few wonderful items from Zia-Priven, Ecelectics and Ashley Lighting.  I raised the remaining $1,500 or so by reaching out to my friends and family and hosting a fundraiser.  Thanks to Craigslist, I found great deals on chairs, tables and an armoire and got most of the remaining items from a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, IKEA, Home Goods and other retailers. I used the book “Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life” to apply Feng Shui to each part of the room and cleared the energy in the room using Reiki to eliminate any negative or past energy and provide a pure clearing for the families to create their lives newly.

Influenced by fashion designers I used to work with (Moschino and Gaultier) I added things to the room to bring humor and make the room feel welcoming.

The kids will enjoy the mini kaleidoscope but the real fun is when the Whoopee Cushion cracks up the entire family.
